Stanhope bridge repairs complete-lanes reopened today

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to advise all road users that the original Traffic Management Plan at the Stanhope bridge in Claremont is fully functional again with two lanes from Main Road towards the bridge reopened to traffic today, 13 March 2026. The lane reduction on Stanhope bridge was put in place as an emergency intervention after the existing retaining wall on the southeast quadrant of the bridge failed on Monday morning, 26 January 2026.

‘We thank motorists, local residents and the general public for their patience and cooperation over the past few weeks. We understand the great inconvenience that the lane closures on the Stanhope bridge have caused for all travelling in the area. We completed the remedial work as soon as possible and I’m happy to say that the original Traffic Management Plan has now been restored,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
 
The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate commenced work on the Stanhope bridge in mid-2025. These works form part of the roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service to the metro-south east to connect commuters from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Wynberg and Claremont.

The work along this bridge is anticipated to be completed towards the end of 2027.
